WHAT IS LICE?

Lice are small parasitic insects that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. They
are highly contagious and can spread quickly in places where people are in close
contact, such as schools and daycare centers. There are three types of lice that affect
humans: head lice, body lice, and pubic lice, but head lice are the most common.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF LICE

  • Itchy scalp or body (due to bites)

  • Visible lice or nits (lice eggs) on the hair or body

  • Red or irritated skin from scratching

  • The feeling of something moving on the scalp or body

RISK FACTORS FOR LICE

  • Close Contact: Sharing hats, combs, or other personal items with an infected person.

  • Crowded Environments: Schools, daycare centers, or camps.

  • Poor Hygiene: While lice is not directly linked to poor hygiene, lice infestations can occur in any environment where people are in close contact.

  • Age: Children aged 3-11 are at higher risk for head lice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@docnptelehealth.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

How do I know if I have Lice?

The most common sign of lice is itching, when the lice bite and feed on your scalp. You may also notice tiny white eggs (nits) attached to the hair shafts or see the lice moving on your scalp. If you're unsure, scheduling an appointment with one of our telehealth providers for an assessment is best.

How do I treat Lice?

Lice can be treated with over-the-counter or prescription medicated shampoos, lotions, or creams. These treatments work by killing the lice and eggs. It's also important to comb through the hair with a fine-toothed comb to remove nits. You can consult our telehealth specialists for guidance on the most effective treatment for your case.

Can I prevent Lice?

Avoid head-to-head contact with others to prevent lice, and do not share combs, hats, or pillows. Regularly checking for lice is also important, especially in children.
